it's a great sign of a band's confidence to name your album "album of the year".. tim kasher is proud of this creation, it seems.. so he should be.. this is an album full of raw emotion and a delivery that matches up. a solid album from start to finish. maybe not "album of the year" literally, but some fun emo-pop, nonetheless. let's shorten that. it's "emop".

one of the best and most mysterious bands to ever hit the indie scene. with only two albums recorded between 1996 (on avery island) and 1998 (in an aeroplane over the sea), the latter being a modern masterpiece, their body of work is minimal to say the least.

Steady as She Goes - a solid performance...i've almost made myself sick of this song, so i have to back off a little..

Intimate Secretary - incredible! what a great song they have written here...and a killer performance...the whole band is great, but jack is in top form.. his solo and vocals throughout are blistering.. but see for yourself!

with help from my friend at down in the groove, i managed get this show from the npr archives, then i converted the wma file to mp3. then i had the daunting task of cutting it all up into tracks, as it was just one big file..

so, it wasn't exactly a clean cut process..let me know if there are any problems...i wasn't really in a right state when i did this..

the show starts off at a high volume and then suddenly drops...guess they had the levels set too high for the radio broadcast..

enjoy the new tunes! i've uploaded one, the newest one (the sword song) for you to hear the quality...or just trust me, it's very good!

Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine (Unreleased Version)

as the story goes, Fiona's label, Epic, pulled the plug on this album when it was first recorded with producer Jon Brion. However, it was actually Apple herself that pulled the plug and decided to rerecord the songs with a different producer, Mike Elizondo. i guess no one knows why she did it. however, check out the early version of "not about love". MUCH better, in my opinion.

Mississippi John Hurt - The Complete '28 Recordings

my favourite of the old dead black blues musician, followed closely by leadbelly. these recordings are as pure as they come. while obviously not the quality of his later recordings, i bet this was amazing quality in 1928! enjoy the great fingerpicking and delivery by this pioneer.

well, i've been at this blog racket for almost a couple months now i guess, and haven't posted the album that inspired the name. though i'm sure you all know the songs, just take the time to revisit the heartbreak that pours from dylan's soul onto an acetate, as they usually did.

Ugly Casanova - Sharpen Your Teeth

Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock's side project from 2001.

the story goes, that a character named Edgar Graham (a.k.a. ugly casanova) attended some Modest Mouse shows in '98 and ended up playing some songs for the band backstage. the band convinced Graham to hand them some songs that the band could send around and hopefully land Graham a deal. then after he gave them the songs, he disappeared.

then in 2001, Brock decided to team up with Tim Rutili (Red, Red Meat & Califone) to flush these songs out and record them under the name "Ugly Casanova"..

no one knows for sure if Edgar Graham really exists, outside a select few in Brock's circle. Either way, i always enjoy a story to go with a band.

My Latest Novel - Wolves (Advance)

here is the forthcoming cd by a scottish indie pop group. there are some very good tracks on this cd, the best being "the hope edition" which has great dynamics, and really shows them as terrific songwriters. the first blog i saw these guys on, the torture garden, had a line next to their song describing them as a "scottish arcade fire".. while i usually don't pin music down like that, in this case it might be a good starting point.

i've been real heavy on these guys lately...not much else is making it into the player.. and to think, they fucking toured together..

so, first up..

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Tokyo, Japan 01.24.06 (great quality audience recording)

big in japan. the japanese have great taste.. and they really love their live music. this is evident with the reactions to some of these songs. this show contains 2 songs i have never heard them do live. one is a song i've never heard at all called "wet dynomite" and the other is "clap your hands!", the lead off track from their album, which i've been waiting to hear live. they totally re-work the ending too...very nice.

The National - Black Sessions

as far as i can tell, it's very hard to track down live stuff from these guys. that being said, this might be all you need. this is a fantastic performance for one of the best radio programs running today. the performance is as good as the quality, both near perfect. for those of you who have only heard "alligator" check out "the cherry tree"..it's an explosive tune.

mmmm...ain't nothin' finer than a good live set by one of the most exciting live bands of today...clap your hands say yeah. 2 months and 6 days til i see these guys again, and it's just not soon enough.. so live sets like these are great ways of passing the time.

i first heard of this guy covering a modest mouse song. turns out he has a whole cd of modest mouse songs...very different from the originals and very good in their own way. this guy kinda has a nick drake/neil young feel to him..more neil young. haven't given it much time yet, but i like it.

DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist - Brainfreeze

i was introduced to dj shadow by his cd "entroducing" (that wasn't supposed to be funny..or cute..). a very good collection of more samples than you can imagine, blended in the most perfect way. this collaboration is interesting. i don't know cut chemist, but it's obvious they work well together right away. the most interesting part is that the album comes in two 25-minute tracks. don't worry though, they hold your attention. i like the second part better right now, because at the end "organ donor" makes a comeback in a big way.

so here we have a band from britain that doesn't have an album released yet, but there is a huge buzz about them already, and having heard the album, they buzzed me.

at the very basic form you might call them the strokes of the UK, but they have one thing the strokes lack...variety. the lead singer sings with perfect angst and energy to a great effect. and the tunes are just about as catchy as they come these days. as my friend marcel said, they might be the stripes of 2008 :D

the first time "clap your hands say yeah" set out on a tour, they were supporting for a band called "the national". i saw CYHSY on this tour, but unfortunately "the national" didn't make it across the border. so, since then, i've been kinda wondering what they sounded like, until a few weeks ago when i found the album on regnyouth. they managed to get me in the first 5 seconds of the first tune "secret meeting", which starts off with a nice hard snare/symbol combo and 2 guitars trading off for a beautiful melody. you'll see what i'm talking about here.

this is just a great, great album by a band that flies well under the radar. i'm assuming these guys will get more recognition this year.

i would consider myself a fan of paul simon's solo work. but then again, up until today i had only heard two of 10 (or so) of his solo albums. didn't realize he had so many. anywho, today i listened to his first effort. this self titled has a lot more to it than i would have thought. it opens with the reggae-ish "mother and child reunion" then right on to my favourite track so far, "duncan" about a poor maritime boy who leaves home and gets laid. beautiful. *single tear*..nah seriously, it's a great tune. though my favourite part of the album so far comes at 1:14 of "everything put together falls apart" when you hear paul scratch his stubble. yeah, i'm a sucker for imperfection in recordings. which is probably why i love bob dylan so much. ooh! i have to post some dylan for you people. where was i going with that? oh yeah! paul simon...

after those tunes there are a couple jazzier numbers, before the guitar gets the open tuned treatment on "armistice day". and some good guitar it is. well done pauly. then a few bluesy , mellow tunes. oh, and julio is there somewhere in the schoolyard. and a fiddle tune that reminds me of django reinhardt. so, as i said...this album has substance.

alright, let me get this off my chest. shamefully, i have to admit, i didn't (actively) listen to one ray charles song until i saw the movie. having said that...thank you, thank you, thank you jamie foxx. his portrayal of charles' troubled and moving life made me realize just how good the man was.

this is pretty much a continuation of my last post.

i'm relatively new to the music blog scene, but apparantly it was the medium which made the first album by clap your hands say yeah album really take off. and so it should have...they are filled with raw emotion. it's something about the nasal, barely coherent voice mixed with great music tracks that remind us all a little of the 80's..and come on, we can all use some 80's grooves.

well, i just found out yesterday that the lead singer, mr. alec ounsworth, has recorded some tracks on his own and plans to release them on a cd in the near future.
